Why is it that Guild Wars is free-to-play?
Considering other MMORPGs of the same style (WoW and DDO: Stormreach), how is it that ArenaNet and NCSoft managed to make a free MMORPG while Blizzard and Atari force their players to pay subscription fees of around the £10 mark...I find this to be more than a little bamboozling!
Guild Wars makes its money through initial sales of the game. It sells non-transferable user licences (keys) and depends on the influx of new players to keep revenue up. A series of game chapters plus one expansion were released, which also keeps income coming into the ArenaNet coffers. Certain upgrades like extra character slots and bonus missions can also be purchased, which again helps with their bottom line. Guild Wars 2 will be coming out next year (2009), which will again inject funds into their company.
I think one of the things that is attractive about this game is its 'no monthly fee' aspect. I can either play a lot or a little in any given month and not feel I am wasting money.
However, one of the complaints about GW is that there is restricted content. Personally, I have been playing for almost 3 years and have yet to explore all the possible areas and do all the possible quests and missions. I suppose if you have no other life than gaming it would be worth it to subscribe to WoW or such for their continually expanding content. However, for the more restrained gamer such as myself the no-monthly-fee certainly outweighs any slight sense of a restricted game environment. I'm sure that market slice was a prime motivation for ArenaNet in setting their game apart from most of the others, as you've mentioned. Makes good business sense to me!
Quarter Comics and I survived the Superflu!
