What Autism Is Not and How Play Therapy May Be Valuable

It’s very fateful that several of people have the wrong idea about autism. Learning about the myths surrounding this disorder is important because these myths stop people from seeing clearly; and therefore, missing prospects to help other people or their own family members that might have autism. The following are a few examples of what autism is not:

It’s not true that autistic individuals are all highly intelligent especially in skills that require common sense, like decoding puzzles and cryptograms. While it’s true that there are a few autistic people who display exceptional gifts in some areas of intelligence, majority has normal or below average skill sets. It may become an undue source of stress when parents compel unreasonable expectations on their autistic child.
Autistic people are dependents and cannot function normally in life without help from other people. This myth is particularly destructive for the development of children diagnosed with autism simply because their abilities will not be realized and their growth will be constrained within the limited expectations that people have of them. The developments in humanistic therapy has made sure that more ways are enriched that are geared with regard to helping people with special needs cope better with life. Autistic children do have feelings and emotions and of course, they can pick up emotions towards other people, just like people who have no autism. As a social communication disorder, autism requires to be approached differently; traditional therapy where oral communication is mostly used would not be pertinent in this case. Play therapy can be helpful in prolonging an autistic child from his or her self engagement bit by bit and in a non-threatening atmosphere. Children with autism act in response to play in distinct behaviors than other children. Play therapists can help parents put forth to their autistic child in ways that are fitted to the child’s level of functionality. With patience and directed effort, parents can exercise play therapy to help their child develop into a highly functioning adult.

In most therapy meetings, the therapist parents will work with will recommend that parents also learn some of the games that they play so that the parents can play with the child even when at home; this doesn’t just speed up the results of the therapy but also fosters a closer bond between parents and children.
