2009 NASCAR Season Dissapointments
It is palpable who the pleasant surprises of the 2009 Sprint Cup season are after thirteen races. The NASCAR news circuit has seen fit to list a few examples. Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman have exceeded preseason expectations. One of the Michael Waltrip Racing drivers David Reutimann, a recent winner at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, is having an amazing season. There is little separating him from the top twelve.
Part-time Sprint Cup racer Brad Keselowski is another first-time winner in 2009. As a driver for Phoenix Racing, the independent team owned by James Finch, he gained an outstanding victory at Talladega.
Open-wheel icons Juan Pablo Montoya and Sam Hornish Jr both showed slight improvements over their 2008 performances.
Now, there have also been disappointments on the circuit, both with drivers and teams that have had less than stellar scores.
It seems that Dale Earnhardt Jr holds the top spot for disappointments of 2009. When Earnhardt Jr first arrived at Hendrick Motorsports in 2008, he was the most promising of the four-car outfit. However, as the season progressed, other teams caught up, and Earnhardt Jr started lagging behind. At present, he has had little luck regaining the momentum that he and Tony Eury Jr held during the preliminary months of the 2008 season. Consequently, Rick Hendrick has replaced crew chief Eury Jr with Lance McGrew. McGrew will serve as the interim crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Earnhardt Jr carries a hefty weight on his shoulder when he is performing well; but when he struggles, the burden seems impossible for him to bear. NASCAR's most popular driver must improve quickly in order to cut down all of the negative press.
Driver Kevin Harvick qualified for the coveted Chase for the Championship every season from the years 2006 through 2008 and won six races during that time. Now, he is struggling to salvage what's left of a season that has proved just about as bad as his 2002 sophomore slump. At this point, Harvick, who hasn't had a victory since the 2007 Daytona 500, has enormous odds against a fourth appearance in the Chase for the Championship.
Harvick is not the only driver from his stable that is failing to hold up to earlier expectations. His Richard Childress Racing teammates have faded since last year, most notably Clint Bowyer. Despite a great start to the 2009 season, Bowyer has not been able to reach the top ten in the seven races leading up to the Pocono 500. Jeff Burton has kept up his consistency, but it is a fact that the team's performance as a whole is off-kilter . Driver Casey Mears has managed to get two top ten finishes in the last four races despite his slow start at open of the season.
Rivaling Earnhardt Jr and Harvick as the largest disappointments include Roush Fenway Racing driver David Ragan. The NASCAR news circuit continues with negative reports. While Ragan showed remarkable improvement during the 2008 season, this season has witnessed his return to mediocrity. With a thirteenth place finish at 2008 championships, NASCAR news and racing analysts were forecasting that Ragan would join the ranks of race car drivers competing in the Sprint Cup championships. Unfortunately, for Ragan, he only scored one top ten finish in the first thirteen races. Something is definitely off with this team.
Ragan's teammate Carl Edwards achieved victory in the Sprint Cup series, with nine races in 2008. After thirteen races, Edwards has yet to perform his race-winning celebratory back flip. Even though he is among the top twelve in the championship standings, we all expected more out of Edwards and the No. 99 group.
