Thoroughbred Racehorses
Ancestry of the Thoroughbred horse:
This form of horse was originally bred in England due to the English horsemens longing to own a rapid horse. There are three that began this bloodline which are: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian, named after their respective owners, Thomas Darley, Lord Godolphin and Captain Robert Byerley. Every one of these stallions were brought to the United Kingdom from the Mediterranean Middle Eastduring 1670 and 1710. The outcome was a breed that could bear weight with sustained pace over extended distances. In the region of 9/10 of new thoroughbreds have descended from Eclipse the grandsire of whom was Darley Arabian, who never lost in eighteen races. This prompted a very selective breeding practice which has continued for all but 250 years, breeding the greatest race horses, giving them superiority and excellence on the race track.
Near the turn of the 1700's, breeding reports for Thoroughbred horses were meager and frequently unfinished, and on any occasions, they would not name a horse until the juvenile horse had proven themself creditable. A man called James Weatherby, through his own investigation and relentless work, and by the consolidation of his personal privately kept pedigree records published the first volume of the General Stud Book. This was done in 1791. The principal book listed 387 mares, every one of which could be traced back to Eclipse. The General Studbook is still in print in the UK by Weatherby and Sons. Many years later, as thoroughbred racing proliferated in North America the necessity for a pedigree registry for American Bred Thoroughbreds, comparable to the General Stud Book became clear.
In 1873, the first American Stud Book was available by Colonel Sanders D. Bruce. This man used up almost a lifetime studying the pedigrees of American Throughbred horses. He followed the example of the General Stud Book creating six volumes of the register up until 1896 when the project was overtaken by The Jockey Club. The reliability of the American Stud Book is the flagstone on which all Thoroughbred racing in North America depends. The foremost edition of the American Stud Book released by The Jockey Club had a foal crop of close to 3,000. In 1986 in had developed to an amazing 51,000. These days The Jockey Club uses a powerful new digital system to meet the registration issues presented by the massive number of annual registrations. The Jockey Club owns and runs one of the most sophisticated computer operations in the world at present, with its catalog holding in excess of 1.8 million thoroughbred horses on a main pedigree file, with names that can be traced back to the 1800's. In addition to bloodlines, this database also deals with daily racing results of every Thoroughbred race in North America, not including the capability to process electronically sent pedigree and racing information from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and other principal Thoroughbred countries. An additional offspring of Darley Arabian is Diomed; he won the earliest running of the Kentucky Derby in 1780. At just 21 years old he was introduced to America where he began the male line via his son, Sir Archie.
Thoroughbreds are the first choice for track racing. Most thoroughbreds are born between January and April, but their certified date of birth is January 1 of the present year. During their first year of development, they are developing size and strength with the youngster beginning his training as a yearling. Throughbred horses learn to receive a bridle and a saddle and a short while after a rider on his back to break in the horse in preparation for the starting gate and the race around the track.
