Uncle Milton Ant Farm – The Original Formicarium from Uncle Milton's Ant Farm Industries

Ever wondered what goes on in the depths of an ant colony deep in the ground? I can tell you it is pretty amazing, extraordinary and compulsive viewing. Using an ant farm or formicarium for the study of ant colonies is not only exciting, but highly educational as well. The aphids are then free to graze on the sap of the plant when hungry, the ants will also protect them from predators and in extreme cases even take the aphid into the colony.

In return for this caring nature the ants are able to excrete a substance known as honeydew (which they are very partial to) from the aphids back by stroking it with their antenna. Incredible behaviour I am sure you would agree, but how did the first ants ever work all this out and then manage to continually pass it down or even from species to species.

I tell you this only to demonstrate that there is so much more to the ant kingdom than most of us would probably realise.

Fascinating would be an understatement, but as you sit at your desk looking at your computer take a second to think what a great addition to your desktop or sideboard an active ant-world would make, knowing that every time you looked up or over that something else would be evolving or unfolding before your eyes.

They certainly get to be the center of attention in a conversation when you have friends round and nine times out of ten someone that has seen an active ant farm will have one themselves within a few weeks, and why not they are hardly a high price item or cost a fortune for their upkeep, quite the opposite in fact.

Build ant farm kits that allow you to make your own formicarium tend to be less favourable as they do require a little more initial input even though they may be slightly more cost effective.
