Lou Ferrigno As The Incredible Hulk

I just love the scenes where David Banner's shirt tears apart as he transforms in the Hulk. Lou Ferrigno was the Hulk in the TV series which ran for 5 seasons from 1978. David Banner was played by Bill Bixby.

Lou Ferrigno was an inspired choice for the Incredible Hulk. Lou was a bodybuilder originally and won both Mr Universe and Mr America in 1969. He also gained second place in Mr Olympia in 1974. He is a six foot five inch hunk of muscle. He also came fourth in the World's Strongest Man contest in 1977. Did you know that he was in competition for the part with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Richard Kiel? But he was the one who was signed by Universal Studios as the Incredible Hulk.

The Incredible Hulk was originally a Marvel Comic and was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The Hulk as he was originally known, first appeared in 1962 as the alter ego of Dr Bruce Banner. For some bizarre reason when the TV series was produced, it was decided to change from Bruce Banner to David Banner. If we believe Stan Lee, the producers considered that David was a more masculine name than Bruce. They didn't want the character to sound gay! They did keep Bruce as the character's middle name, however.

According to the TV series, David Banner was exposed to gamma radiation in his job as a physicist. The radiation came form a test detonation. The gamma radiation combined with extreme emotional stress altered his body chemistry made him involuntarily transform into the Hulk – a huge green skinned creature with super human strength. When David returned to his normal state, he would have no memory of being the Hulk. He would come back to himself with tattered clothing and no knowledge of what had happened to him. His clothing bill must have been enormous! From that time, David became a fugitive, on the run from the military.

As well as the TV series, there have been several movies. The Hulk (2003) starred Eric Bana. The Incredible Hulk (2008) starred Edward Norton. Computer generated effects were used for the Hulk in both these movies.

Even though the special effects in the recent films were amazing, the character of the Hulk is totally unrealistic. I still feel that Lou Ferrigno gave the best portrayal of the Hulk.

I love the Incredible Hulk character so much so that for a fancy dress event I dressed up as the Incredible Hulk which was extremely well received. So, if you fancy transforming into this angry green giant then why not try an Incredible Hulk costume for Halloween or any fancy dress event. Take a peek at some of the best costumes I have come across. There's even an inflatable hulk costume which has a battery-operated inflating fan.
