TV Reviews And The Varied History Of TV In Britain
Television in Britain has become arguably the most creative and diverse in the world with popular programmes forever receiving rave TV reviews and continuing to charm audiences across the globe. In 1932, BBC TV was officially launched and has since created some of the best and varied programmes in the world. One programme that has withstood the test of time is ITV's Coronation Street, which has gripped audiences for over 50 years.
The planet is continually absorbed by Simon Cowells controversial talent shows, Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. However, Britain also gave the world brilliant programmes such as Jacob Bronowski’s The Ascent of Man and epic nature series like Life on Earth and The Blue Planet, wonderfully created by David Attenborough.
The British way of life is reflected even more convincingly in timeless and indestructable comic creations like George Cole’s Arthur Daley in Minder, Arthur Lowe and co in Dad’s Army, John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers and the classic Only Fools and Horses than in the serious TV documentaries for which Britain has become world-renowned.
The Monty Python series became a global legend in the Seventies and Eighties, while comedian Ricky Gervais recently won the hearts of the American public and also achieved great TV reviews in Britain.
The BBC’s successful re-launch of Doctor Who in 2005 made the TV news, although British Sci-fi is often in the shadow of iconic Hollywood series such as Battlestar Galactica. Popular TV detective programmes include Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, while Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass stories also remain influential 60 years later. The BBC’s enduringly successful Spooks has become popular in recent times due to the resurface of the spy thriller.
Other dramas that have impacted British TV history are Our Friends in the North, The Jewel in the Crown, State of Play, and the original Upstairs Downstairs. A new wave of the iconic British costume drama was recently heralded by Downton Abbey - a surprise hit by Julian Fellowes.
