Toys That You May Not Think of as Learning Toys

There is something special about children and their toys. As a child, I can't remember a girl who didn't have a Barbie or a boy who didn't run around the yard waving around action figures to conquer classic villains. I recall scale model sets being spread all over the floors of every playroom I entered as a youth, including my own. We would construct amazing things with those building sets; tall buildings for our Barbie doll or stuffed toys to live in, a store where they would buy all of their groceries; the potential was only limited by our imaginations. While toys like these don't usually fit into the category of educational toys, they have the ability to show children some valuable lessons.

All toys can be important to children, even those that parents may not at first believe to be educational toys. This is as true today as it was decades ago when I sat playing board games with my sister. Children learn through play, and they cultivate their imaginations and their critical thinking skills. While one may tend to think that only learning games are able to to teach a child anything, that would be a misconception. Truly, most toys are learning toys when you recognize that a child learns from playing freely.

It is true that classic board games, while offering hours of entertainment, also work on developing a child's reasoning talents as well as coping skills. Not everyone is a winner when playing classic board games, and occasionally losing at something is as important for a child to learn as emerging victorious is. When one player wins and the other loses in a board game, one player is humbled while the other, hopefully, learns to be a gracious winner. With the assistance of a focused parent, children will develop these skills. So popular are some board games that they are being created in ways that they can be played in the car. Travel games may not be as exciting as the original board games, but it sure keeps a child busy in the car!

For many decades, fathers and sons have spent hours of quality time over model sets. The vibrantly colorful blocks in a Lego set bring forth the very best in a child's imagination, and keep them engaged for days. The great thing about LEGO sets is that just one set could produce lots of different items, from a dinosaur to a gas station. Over the years, Lego sets have grown to where there are now sets mainly for girls, such as the Belville line. Naturally, boys love Lego sets like Star Wars or Bionicles. But every child can learn deftness and creativity through Lego sets, and that's what really matters.

Need convincing of the value of Lego sets as an educational toy? Studies prove that children acquire new brain connections when building with LEGO sets. By merely playing with their Lego set, children also learn spatial concepts, cause-and-effect, and fine motor skills. What a way to learn!
