Is Frank Lampard the new Bobby Charlton?
For a game changing moment, England will often look to its goal-scoring midfielder. It is that crucial role that can “make things happen”, by forcing the issue with a goal of their own. The World Cup campaigns for England often rely on such a player, just look at Bobby Charlton on home turf in 1966, Bryan Robson at Espana 1982, or David Platt at Italia 1990.
Frank Lampard is primed to step into this essential role, in order to secure success at South Africa 2010. Currently on 77 caps, he is the seventh most capped England midfielder of all-time, behind Steven Gerrard (78 caps), John Barnes (78), Ray Wilkins (84), Bryan Robson (90), Charlton (106) and David Beckham (115).
With a 49 goals to claim, Sir Bobby remains England’s highest goal-scorer. But of all the great England midfielders above, it is probably most appropriate to compare the records of Bryan Robson and Frank Lampard. Both players have remained loyal to England, despite advances from Italian football clubs.
A dynamic midfielder, Bryan Robson began his senior career at West Bromwich Albion in 1978 before moving on to Manchester United in 1981 where he enjoyed his peak years until 1994, resisting a move to Juventus in 1983 and winding down his playing years at Middlesbrough until 1996, where he also managed. “Captain Marvel”, as he came to be known, captained for England 65 times in his playing years between 1980 until 1991, during this time, he scored 26 times for a ratio of 0.29 goals per game in international football.
Frank Lampard has played for Chelsea since 2001, despite links for an Inter Milan transfer in 2008: before this he began his senior career at West Ham United in 1995 before moving to Chelsea in 2001. He made his senior international debut in 1999 and has scored 20 goals, for a ratio of 0.26 and depending upon this summer’s World Cup campaign, Lampard could move within one cap of Robson in 2010. His England scoring ratio has upped to an astonishing 0.60 goals per game in 2009, bagging six in 10 England appearances, showing every indication that he could go beyond Robson’s goal-scoring feats.
“Lamps” has already scored 21 goals in 42 Chelsea appearances in 2009/10. Lampard’s records may draw favourable comparison with Robson, if he can maintain his form this year. And if the dream does become reality, England fans may yet have reason to compare Lampard’s accomplishments with those of Sir Bobby.
