The Love Of Portrait Drawing
For a portrait artist, the difficulty lies in capturing single emotions, moods, and moments. However, portraits are the specialty of one self taught artist who hangs his in the Marion home he shares with his wife. It took some time for him to complete a grand montage of an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. He begins by grabbing photos from videos, which yields unexpected expressions. Only people who touched his life during the year and a half he spent painting the montage were included. The lead singer from Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast and singer songwriter, is the subject of the individual portraits covering the rest of the walls. He has had the most experience with pencil, graphite, and charcoal. Conte crayon and colored pencil pieces were next. His Japanese wife, a native of Kobe, and he were the subjects of his first colored pencil sketch. He felt he did a good job of coupling traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print in the drawing. Taken at City Hall in December 1996, their close up wedding photograph serves as the basis of this drawing, which he enhances with personal and Japanese symbols. Though not present at the actual wedding, he included their three cats. There is a mask in Japanese opera that is believed to ward off evil spirits, and he used this as the face of the first cat. Good luck comes to those in a certain position, and he draws the second cat in it. Instead of what they actually wore at the wedding, he drew them in kimonos. His wife is decorated with kikyo, a flower that is her matriarchal symbol. In order to draw notice to the gingko tree, he drew it past the third cat, past the vertical blinds, outside the room. The first project the couple had together was the 1997 drawing. It was his wife's job to develop and critique ideas. The drawing has high sentimental value for them, said the wife. He says he would like to see his art evolve more into landscapes, but with people in them because that's what he likes to draw the most. He has never had his own exhibit, but his work has been published, four inside and one cover, in a book. The book editor was exposed to his work after a staff member brought it to his attention. The editor was so moved she sent an email saying she admired his technique, blend of portraiture and architecture, and portrayal of depth amidst humor. As a kid, he drew mostly action heroes and rock stars, and he has traveled far since those days. His skills are so refined that he can portray on paper any image or impression. He explains that his drawings are like photographs, in which the likeness is embellished by adding or changing things.
