Giant Earrings: A Celebrity Fashion We'll Look Back On and Cringe

Oversized earrings are the fashion accessory of the moment. Most recently we've seen the likes of Kate Winslet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Kate Beckinsale at the Globes and Michelle Obama at the inauguration, adorned with glittering long earrings that fall below their jaws.

Now doctors have decided to speak out about this growing trend, warning that they can cause permanent damage to your earlobes. The number of cases requiring serious cosmetic surgery to repair damaged ears has risen alarmingly of late.It appears our ears dont agree with us hanging blinged up miniature dumbells off the end of them!No kidding!

But this warning, despite garnering a lot of news coverage, isn't going to change anything in the fashion world. The risk of needing cosmetic surgery on a damaged ear is unlikely to put off the fashion icons and trendsetters. High flying celebrities all have their own personal cosmetic surgeons anyway. Anyway, their enormous bank balances aren't exactly going to notice the cost of surgery. They will still show up on TV and in glossy magazines with supersized designer 7-inch drop chandeliers with saltwater pearls. And while they do, fashion conscious young women and girls are always going to follow suit and buy the high street equivalents.Frankly the notoriety from all this press is probably going to make them even more popular with young girls looking to make that rebellious fashion statement.

Perhaps even more worrying is the growing trend amongst goth-inclined teenagers, both male and female, to get into what's known as "lobe stretching".You might have guessed from the name that this practice actually sets out to squeeze and pull your piercing using progressively larger "plugs".By the end of it you are left with a large dangling circle of flesh hanging from your ears. Hey, if that's what floats your boat who am I to question it. But what if you change your mind ten years down the line? You're left with permanently damaged and deformed ears and no means to reverse them!

My feeling is that all this is going to come back to haunt us as our generation grows up and takes stock. Will we all be looking back on these oversized accessories and ludicrously stretched earlobes and shaking our heads in disbelief? Will giant earrings be one day be consigned to the dustbin of fashion history, along with massive Kate Moss style bug eye sunglasses? Personally I'd rather look back and laugh at it MINUS the permanent scarring, thank you very much. I think I'll stick to my penchant for modest pearl jewellery and grow old gracefully.
