Has chicago's drafting success really made their future bright?
I never liked chicago lol.
they seem to be a team that in one generation is really good and then in the next they cant win.
But as of late i have noticed a pattern in their drafting.. it's really good.
they got Pat kane, Jonathon toews, Dave Bolland, Brent Seabrook, Cam Barker who they drafted within the past few years and were all smart pickups.
Now another player who they drafted in the second round last year i think was Akim Aliu.
Akim is a very smart and Talented player who is one of those guys who is so tough, can lay out anybody, but he can still put the points up.
Why cant Toronto Draft like Chicago?
The draft is a crap shoot, and both Rick Dudley (Chicago's Asst. GM) and Jimmy Devallano (Detroit's president) will tell you that.
After you get past the first few picks, there isn't a lot to separate the players.
Over the years, the Toronto Maple Leafs had money, so teams like Toronto, Detroit, Rangers, Flyers, etc chose to buy players rather than draft and develop them.
Teams that had very little money (Ottawa, Buffalo, Pittsburgh) or were cheap (Chicago, Devils) chose to draft players and develop them.
Over the years, things changed. A salary cap was imposed, all of a sudden drafting became important. Toronto has been slow to respond and is trying to revamp it's scouting staff. Chicago on the other hand, has a deep scouting staff. However, part of Chicago's success is that people like Toews and Kane were no brainers.
People will marvel at Detroit's success by talking about Fedorov, Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg. These picks have panned out NOT because Detroit got lucky, but because Detroit believed in them. This is something Detroit has been good at for years.
There are tons of great players taken past 100th in the draft. Many are pissed they weren't taken earlier, many never get signed because some teams don't care past that point, and then there are those where the team sends them a cheque and a plane ticket and says...come on over. Thomas Kaberle and Henrik Lundqvist fit in this category as well.
The Leafs need to do two things
1) revamp their scouting staff and start drafting players who can play in the NHL
2) start using the Marlies as a development team instead of a 'down the highway' cash cow. The only legitimate NHLers on the Marlies are Battaglia and Pogge. The rest are career minor leaguers who may see game action here and there (like Bruce Boudreau 30 years ago).
John Ferguson Jr was insulted recently that THN picked them as the second worst drafting team (detroit was last) but Cliff Fletcher was questioning why they were even ahead of Detroit.
So, a large part of the problem is that the guy running the show for the last 5 years didn;t see that a problem existed, and you can't fix what you can't see.
Dale Tallon knew there was a problem in Chicago (trading away draft picks for 4th line wingers) and committed himself to changing the process.............and hiring somebody to help him (Rick Dudley). Phoenix is in a similar mode after replacing Barnett.
Once Toronto hires a real GM, and that GM brings in decent scouts, we'll see how they adjust. Will the new GM be the type of guy that signs the Lindros, Nieuwendyks, and Roberts of the worlds as an annual stop-gap measure, or will he start looking for the next John Tavares, Mario Lemieux, or Patrick Kane....................onloy time will tell.
