Does a scratch on a coin effect the value by a lot?
I have a 1954 S quarter and it's in very good condition except for a scratch on the front. It's about half an inch long and it starts on the r in liberty and ends on washintons head. The back and edge are in perfect condition and it's really shiny. If it was ms70 (i know it's probably not) what would the scratch bring it down to and what would it be worth. sorry i dont know how to put a pic of it on here.
A scratched coin is considered a damaged coin, a 'problem' coin. No such coin would get to the MS level. ANACS will certify a problem coin with the grade if the problem did not exist, but also note the problem. As an example, you would see an ANACS coin with 'MS62 Details, Scratched'. Since the '54 S is not rare, your coin would not be worth professional grading, and most collectors will pass on it. It's really worth just the silver content, as of today, $2.88.
