KIDS FLOORING COVERINGS – A MAGIC CARPET RIDE
When kids and pets come into the equation when choosing floor coverings – things take on a whole new complexion. For the younger generation, floors are more than something to sit on or walk across – they’re battlegrounds, wrestling mats, race tracks, football fields, fairy gardens or sometimes even a blank canvas for budding artists! . The only limit is their imagination. And that’s why we have to use our own imaginations quite carefully when choosing what to put onto the family floors.
A poor decision will cost both time and money. Taking the time to tick a few boxes will save a lot of tears and hassle (not to mention money) further down the line. Follow these easy tips to find kid-friendly flooring for your family:
Safe and sound
Kids’ health and well-being is paramount, so it’s best to look for floor coverings that provide a safe and stable platform for busy kids. Slip resistance and shock absorption are also key attributes. A non-slip carpet is probably the safest option, but other avenues could be rubber flooring, bamboo, cheap carpet tiles and wooden flooring with a rug over the top. Look for something that provides a softer landing – especially when it comes to energetic kids and budding super heroes!. Tiles are probably not the best option as they are very hard and can be slippery.
And if you have budding tennis players, bike riders or simply have kids who like to slide around – laminate or vinyl flooring is a good option. Because these can be replaced in small sections, they offer a cost-alternative option where wear and tear is an issue.
Health matters
If your children are prone to allergies – try and avoid carpets with a thick pile where dust and other allergens can accumulate and avoid coverings that give off lots of fluff or lint. Floors that provide an environment for the growth of mould, fungus or bacteria should also be avoided.
Choosing colours
A dark carpet is a good foil for spills and stains, muddy paws and footprints and other general marks and spills, but it will show up dust, crumbs, light coloured pet hair etc. The best choice for purpose and performance is to choose a middle tone carpet – in earthy colours, browns and neutral beiges. Neutrals always provide a versatile and practical decorating platform – add a colourful rug or funky playmat to add interest (which can be cleaned or changed with ease). .
Carpets with a pattern, texture or ones with a varying tone also provide a practical option for hiding life’s day to day spills and thrills.
A soft or hard landing?
Plush carpets are good for grown-ups, not for growing families! . Tempting as the luxury and feel of a thick-pile carpet may be, it’s probably not worth it. When it comes to family flooring, luxury generally takes a back seat behind durability and practicality, but there are many great flooring options available.
Nylon carpets are a good choice, as they are colour-fast, hard-wearing and retain their appearance even with constant use. Tight-weave carpets or those with small, tightly packed loops are also a good choice as they won’t snag on pet paws, toys or other objects.
Protecting your assets
Laying a teflon-coated or scotchguarded carpet is also a good idea as it offers another layer of protection against the rigours of a busy family.
Cleanability
The carpet supplier should advise you on how to clean your carpet or floor covering BEFORE you make your final decision. A Perth flooring specialist recommends that any floor covering in a family or high traffic area should be vacuumed at least weekly and professionally cleaned every so often to get rid of allergies and stains and to prolong their good looks and their life. Also, look for carpets that are rated ‘Extra Heavy Duty’ as these will provide the best wear-and-tear performance in a family environment.
