The Truth About Overpopulation
When our second child was born over 35 years ago, we were told by well-intentioned friends that we should not have any more children because the world is already overpopulated. We obviously didn’t agree for we had five more. Since then the rant continues.
Paul Ehrilich stated about 50 years ago, “It is already too late to avoid famines that will kill millions, possibly by 1975”. Another false prophet said, “I state flatly that the hungry world will not able able to feed itself ten years from now”. This warning was given in 1967. Yet, the evidence declares overpopulation and its woes to be simply untrue.
Indeed, the world is getting more populated. In the U.S. the rate is presently one more person every 16 seconds. The world is 3.5 billion people larger than it was in 1950. However, this does not mean it is overcrowded. For evidence, ask yourself how far you would have to go from your home to be in wide open spaces? For us, it would take five minutes.
In the U.S. the population density of the state of New Jersey is indeed 1171 people/mile2, yet 7 states have less than 20 people/mile2 and the same number have fewer than a million citizens. The density of the entire US is only 95. The city where I live is typical; it fits its 65,400 people into 30 square miles, giving a population density of 2160 people/mile2. The place children spend most of their time during the week, the school classroom, has a population density of a million people/mile2. To be crowded, people must choose to crowd together. Overpopulation is not caused by a lack of land.
The world population density is 34 people/mile2, or 7 ½ acres of useable land for every man, woman, and child. Most of the world is still uninhabited. Indeed, the entire world population could live in West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri under the same conditions as those in New York City, about 25,000 people/mile2. In an American suburbia density, we could all fit into the 48 contiguous states.
Usually countries like India (890 people/mile2) or Bangladesh (2750 people/mile2) are used as proof of world overpopulation. The crowded conditions are blamed for their troubles. Yet industrial giant Japan has a density only slightly less than India. Instead, it is often the false religious systems, government controls, and wars that feed the pests and starve the people. It can clearly be shown that the land of India as well as many others could provide food for all its people.
Yet the warning trumpets continue to be blasted. “We cannot long continue our present rate of progress. The first check for our growing prosperity, however, must render our population excessive” . Does this sound like the morning news? It was written in 1865! “Our number are burdensome to the world, which can hardly support us”. This goes back to Tertullian, written in the second century! The truth is that India alone has sufficient rich farm land to feed the entire world! And food production has increased 1000% in the last 75 years. The danger of starving is constantly decreasing, not increasing.
What difference does it make whether or not these facts are believed or not? The rule governments follow is this: if you create a crisis, you can control the people. The phantom overpopulation teaching has for one thing, encouraged abortion, for they claim, among other things, that the child will demand resources that will simply be unavailable. Children are a liability to the world and any way to get rid of them is viewed as good.
The medical field is also influenced, as expressed in a leading textbook for training Gynecologists. “In the minds of many, rapid growth of population has become second only to nuclear warfare as civilization’s greatest menace. The gynecologist- obstetrician has assumed a leadership role and has recognized the necessity of controlling human fertility. . . Population growth is perforce temporary; that it will- indeed must- eventually cease, halted either by an increase in deaths or a decrease in births. There is no other way. Thus, people must come to want fewer children”. A woman visited a doctor so trained might get what advice if he feels she has had enough children? The fact is that hysterectomies are the second most common major surgery each year (800,000), and only 10% are due to cancer.
The real problem is a lack of love for children, not a fear that there are too many. They are viewed as a nuisance, a hindrance to reaching our goals. Yet children are the future of a country, for good or evil. When properly trained, they multiply the potential of parents and benefit society in a multitude of positive ways. Children are indeed not the cause of the world’s destruction, but its future hope.
The founders of No Greater Joy love children and set up their ministry dedicated to sharing the principles of wholesome child training and joyful family relationships. Visit their website for great tips today.
