Women Are More Easily Able To Make It In The Medical Field Today
Due to the fact the more and more females are pursuing medical careers, the ways in which this subject is taught and and practiced might be drastically changed. In recent past, the division between male and female applicants was nearly equal. Cohorts of medical students were roughly 50-50 between men and women. Lately though, the number of women applying for medical school has increased dramatically. As a person looking for medical jobs you should visit that site.
This can be contributed to a couple of things, one being the feminist movement showing that women aren't subject to a certain kind of work. You will see many more women enter engineering and law, along with a rise in women in medicine. Not only are women applying for these spots, but the medical schools are being pressured more than ever to accept more women. Antidiscrimination laws and regulations have made tremendous strides in terms of modifying the treatment of women in the workplace and in schools. The laws have been put into place slowly and the progress has not been linear, but haphazardly.
You won't find any recent data available for a dropout rate among female medical school students. However, older data indicates that females were more prone to quit than we males, but females usually quit for reasons other than those related to school. Some of those issues that influenced higher dropout rates, such as pressure felt due to being a minority in a school vastly comprised by men, are no longer a problem at most schools, so many feel that today's numbers are more evened out as well for dropout rates. Because of more women going into the medical field, a lot of the old traditions that were discriminatory have been put to rest.
One example is the way that professors or instructors at university would speak in class, using language or jokes that might be demeaning or degrading to female students. The joke went like this: out of this group of words, which one does not belong: rug, woman, sex or egg? His answer was sex since sex can't be beaten. Even though this isn't half as bad as some of the things women were putting up with on an everyday basis in the hallway of schools, it is still bad enough to keep women from being respected. These jokes could soon be gone for good as well as some of the other overly discriminatory practices commonly found in the medical school setting. You will find that further information on doctors jobs in is on that site.
Not only were they being attacked for being women in general, but one woman even had to go through the situation of being denied participation in a group activity that included an overall physical examination of a male patient because the patient would not be dressed and she would be able to see his genitals. Yet, in a near medical bay, her husband, who is also a medical student, was permitted to not only observe, but perform a pelvic exam on a female. In addition, female students are almost always required to answer a question related to having a career and a family at the same time. Males are usually not questioned on this topic. The numbers of women were so low that they lacked representation by other women in important places like faculty and admissions, and these women are also challenging the long held belief that women are not able to practice medicine effectively, regardless of being licensed or not, in certain specialty medicines, one being surgery.
One of the most common questions in an admission interview was about whether a woman would choose marriage or career, and there is denial as to whether this particular question led to being denied access to medical school. The answer the women gives is irrelevant because some male interviewers will bar the woman's admission regardless. If the woman answers that she will have day care for her children, the interviewer claims she should be home with them rather than at work being a doctor. Say she says she's going to have children and take care of them herself, the interviewer will then tell her she's not taking medicine seriously.
Through all the interviews, the general feeling came up that women doctors could be a bit more sensitive than males. However, this claim was shot down as being a female stereotype. However, many medical students and hospital staff will tell you that there are some very tough women and some really sensitive men working in the medical field, so that stereotype doesn't really hold true these days.
One particular med school dean offered the opinion that overall, females have certain characteristics that are very appreciated in the medical field. Because most women were taught to be caring and open to others, this will make for a good beside manner within the medical field. Aggressiveness is one trait mainly harbored by males, but there are females who possess this trait as well.
