The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks - A Stunning Treasure!
HeLa Cells are fundamentally valuable for many of the reasons cited in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. First, they allowed standardization of cell culture protocols, which allows scientists to more accurately replicate each others work, in order to verify discoveries. Second, they allowed for fundamental discoveries in procedural matters, such as how to freeze and transport cells, critical for ALL research on human cells.
And third, and most critical, cancerous cells, while having various differences (genetic, epigenetic, biochemical, morphological, gerontological (if an individual will), etc.), are similar enough to normal cells to teach us an ENORMOUS amount, and they are far easier to maintain and grow. eople today have, and complete, say that HeLa tissue are useful for sheer difficulty to kill. I joked with my significant other, when they were learning cell culture, that HeLa's were the cells to get, because they are impossible to kill. And, largely, they are. But, they have so many similarities with normal cells that finding out that they are different in some fashion is, itself, a noteworthy finding.
The Henrietta Lacks’ Book will start a dialogue and the issue of correct models for cancer research will be debated by scientists on both sides. HeLa is not the sole cell line being employed by researchers world wide in the war against this illness. Despite the great contributions of Henrietta Lacks and other cancer patients to this war and all that their families went through, we do not still, sixty years later, have a cure for metastatic disease. All we have is the widespread assumption that the model used to study cancer is correct.
This story resurrects Henrietta Lacks the woman, the mother, the caretaker, the fun-loving, beautiful young woman, from the the abstraction of the name given by George Guy to her cells, HeLa. In the process, with the constant aid of Deborah Lacks, Skloot humanizes Henrietta's family, uncovers details about race and the healthcare system, and brings to light the social forces that make a life and a family.
Rebecca Skloot is a science journalist who sets the record straight about the human exploitation and dehumanization of Lacks and her descendants as she denounces the total absence of a bio-ethical conscience at the time, but she also points to many continued medical abuses and injustices in the present. This book will change the way you look at science and the media, perhaps, just perhaps a few young people will find a reason to pursue a college education. Without a superior education humans increase their vulnerability to a wide array of societal schemes.
Finally ,The Henrietta Lacks Immortal should be required reading for scientists and students of life. The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family has finally been told, beautifully, in this book. The book encompasses science, ethics, and the story of a family who was terribly wronged in the pursuit of scientific research. It's also an extremely human story, with poverty and illness, of people who are marginalized and exploited, who keep his or her heads up when confronted with crushing obstacles. It leaves you with questions: how would you feel if your body was used without permission for the benefit of science and if profits were made on that science which didn't get passed along to your loved ones?
