G.I. Joe - Don't Call Him A Doll
In 1959 the Barbie doll was produced for American girls in addition to their trend-conscious parents, and the term “fashion doll” was enshrined in our vocabulary. Fashion dolls joined up with the ever-increasing varieties of dolls from baby dolls to china dolls which had one common attribute – they were intended for girls. Another great alternative is the Gamo Air Rifles.
In 1964, Hasbro launched a collection of military-styled figures intended to be a boy-friendly antithesis of the Barbie doll. The toys were never referred to as dolls, even in the very first commercials, simply because they were so naturally created for boys. The term “action figure” was born, and from then on a humanoid toy which was obviously designed for fighting was known as an action figure.
The very first G.I. Joe action figures were really four unique figures dressed as members of the four branches of the department of defense. The nickname G.I. are the initials for Government Issue, which evolved into a universal monicker for U.S. Soldiers throughout WWII.
Every G.I. Joe was sold with a uniform and hat for the relevant branch of service. All the figures furthermore were sold alongside a complete collection of equipment specific to their branch of service; for example, the infantryman would work with an optional rifle and web gear which were sold separately as well as as part of a more substantial package. Each G.I. Joe figure had a World War II theme, although their outfits and equipment were closer in style to the recently fought Korean War. Another great product to consider is the Gamo Air Rifles.
The initial military men were the same size as the Barbie dolls in those days; 11 1/2 inches.Through the mid-1970s, the action figures had recieved a new hand style that could grip their own equipment like rifles and combat knives. The action figures had also shrunk to 8" tall to be better aligned with the rapidly growing action figure market which was currently overwhelmed by the comic book superhero toys. In another acknowledgement of their new rivals, the military men were now rebranded "Super G.I. Joe". During the 80s, Joe shrank for a second time, to 3 3/4 inches, and then increased to 12 inches once more in 1991.
One outcome of all this expanding, minimizing, re-branding and the occasional revival of previous product lines is that you are now able to buy a G.I. Joe action figure in practically any size Hasbro has ever produced. The standard action figure is currently a 6” figure and many characters sell for less than $10, and some 12” collector G.I. Joes are out there, and there is actually a 16” Duke figure in an accelerator suit which you can buy for $30.
Obviously, the variety of accessories and vehicles has multiplied several times, seeing as they currently have almost 50 years of weaponry to draw from along with any futuristic gadgets that the idea guys at Hasbro may come up with. Quite a few small boys – and a number of fully grown ones, as well – love fighting and winning wars with their G.I. Joe action figures. Just don’t call them dolls. Another nice option is the Gamo Air Rifles.
