Buying Collectibles Online
Collectors are a specialist lot in that they possess a fanatical interest in items in which others may not immediately perceive the value. But, in spite of what those who are not colloectors think, there is a huge market for rare sports memorabilia, antiques, comics, artwork, stamps and items derived from popular culture. Previously, acquiring such items was somewhat difficult. Today however, the internet has made it easy to locate these items.
At one time, the only way to purchase collectible comic book items was either at trade shows trade shows, auctions or through mail order catalogues. Obviously, it is much more laborious to visit a trade show than it is to visit a webpage. Using a website's checkout function is also much easier than having to write out a check and send it to a PO box. Obviosly, the additional ease of placing an internet order is a huge plus when it comes to finding and placing an order for collectibles on the internet.
Also, the internet has seen prices drop on several rare collectibles. This is because it's easy to locate items on the internet. In the past, if a rare collectible such as a 1950s comic book was only available through 10 stores in the United States, {the majority of people} wouldn't have known of the existence of the comic book unless they went and visited one of the stores. Today, all 10 stores could put the comic book up for sale on Ebay simultaneously. So, even though the comic may be a rare item, the scarcity factor is reduced and this forces the price to drop.
And speaking of prices dropping, Ebay's listing fees are very minimal as opposed to placing mail order ads. Instead of paying a hefty fee for a magazine ad, Ebay charges a very minimal listing fee and takes a cut of the sale. This reduction in overhead costs is another factor that lets the seller lower prices as well. As such, buying on the internet is a much more cost effective option than following the traditional method.
Something to keep in mind however: it is difficult to ascertain the condition of an item if you are buying via the internet. A photo of what is for sale may not completely show an accurate representation of the condition. Because of this, it is critical that you make sure there is a return policy in effect. If the item is not in the condition you assumed it would be in then you should have the option of getting your money back.
It is safe to say however, that most collectible dealers are very professional and they do not sell low-quality merchandise. Therefore, most online collectible purchases should go without problems and will meet all expectations.
