Madrid Hotels And Spanish Classics
An event this year which aims to celebrate the art of storytelling and raise people’s awareness of how cities and literature are entwined, occurs from the 29th January to the 5th February. The great city of history and art, London, was the basis for Charles Dickens’ ‘Tale of Two Cities’ as was ‘Vanity Fair’ and ‘ The Picture of Dorian Gray’.
If you’re a fan of classic books then you’ll be able to find the locations of your favourite scenes in many great cities. Many people come and stay at Madrid hotels to discover for themselves the city and surrounding countryside, which inspired such classics as Don Quixote. {Madrid is the setting for Ernest Hemingway’s classic ‘Death in the Afternoon’ which is all about the tradition and ceremony of the art of bullfighting}.
Stay in one of the older Edinburgh hotels and find yourself in a city of great literature. Many famous writers including Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott lived and worked in Edinburgh. The most famous Edinburgh story of all though is the endearing one of Greyfriars Bobby, the love of a small Skye terrier for his master. The second of the ‘Sunday Philosophy Club’ set of novels by Alexander McCall Smith was based in modern day Edinburgh and Ian Rankin’s Inspector Rebus concentrates on the streets and lanes of Edinburgh, that Rankin knows so well. The creator of ‘Trainspotting’, Irvine Welsh bases quite a few of his books around this city too. ‘Filth’ and ‘The Acid House’ being two good examples. Edinburgh’s most famous author though has to be J K Rowling who began the Harry Potter series of books sitting in one of the city’s many cafes.
Book into any of Paris hotels and get a feel for the city that has inspired such classics as ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ by Victor Hugo. Edgar Allen Poe also based his grisly tale ‘Murders in The Rue Morgue’ around the streets of Paris.
