Tucson Rampage Killer's Profile Discussed by Forensic Psychologist
On Saturday, January 8, 2011, six people were killed and nineteen people shot by a deranged man. The suspected target of the shooter was a United States Congresswoman, while she was meeting with constituents in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, a suburb of Tucson, Arizona. The deceased include a nine-year-old girl, a congressional aide, and John McCarthy Roll, the chief judge for the United States 9th District Court. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat representing Arizona's 8th congressional district, said to be the target of the attack, was shot in the head at close range and is in critical condition. A 22-year-old local man, Jared Lee Loughner, was arrested at the scene. The motive for the shooting is presently unclear, however, some media reports have been focusing on the mental health of the shooter.
Jared Lee Loughner fits many of the traits of a rampage killer. The profile of the rampage killer is as follows and he meets this criterion succinctly.
1. Rampage killers mostly murder strangers. As of the time of this posting, the victims of his attack were unknown to him based on news information.
2. In roughly 25% of rampage killer cases, a relationship issue such as a divorce or breakup is the precipitating event. Approximately 45% of rampage killers are triggered by unexpected employment losses. There has been so far no information suggesting employment or relationship events triggered his rage.
3. Shopping centers, schools, malls, college campuses, and various other public places are arenas rampage killers choose to display their violent assaults. Mr. Loughner chose a supermarket parking lot filled with people of all ages attending a gathering for a political leader.
4. Adult rampage killers tend to act alone. Adolescent assailants are more likely to involve other participants in their rampage. Authorities have found and ruled out their person of interest suggesting Mr. Loughner was involved alone in the attack.
5. Over 50% of rampage killers have a history of mental illness. News reports have suggested Mr. Loughner was expelled from a local community college. He could return if he had proof of mental health clearance. Mr. Loughner never returned to the community college.
6. Historically, rampage killers tend to be gender male and Caucasian. Women and other races are not void of the potential for rampage example. The VirginiaTech massacre was a college campus shooting that took place on April 16, 2007 on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. In two separate attacks, Seung-Hui Cho, killed 32 people before committing suicide. The massacre is the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in United States history.
7. One third of adult rampage killers have high levels of education and unemployed at the time of the rampage killings. At the time of the shootings, Mr. Loughner was unemployed, a high school drop-out, not enrolled in college classes.
8. Rampage killers rarely try to flee from the incident. Many of them commit suicide at the scene of the crime or allow themselves to be taken into custody. Mr. Loughner is in federal custody.
9. Adult rampage killers often have military backgrounds and possess weapons they have obtained legally. Mr. Loughner was never accepted to the military due to failing a drug test. A security video shows him purchasing the semi-automatic weapon he used legally after passing a federal background check.
With each passing day, more background information will be released to illustrate how deranged Mr. Loughner lived his life. Reports will continue to be released with some being suspect and others being verified. The goal is for all to practice patience until all the facts are proven genuine.
