In the film Kiss of the Dragon, why is Richard beating up a random man on the kitchen floor?
Is it ever explained? At first I thought he was a criminal (no explanation needed for his douchebaggery), but then it turns out he's a police man (yes yes I know a bad police man) but who is that guy getting beaten? He then gets hanged up and kicked inthe face by the big guy in a bomber jacket... it's at the very start.

I think that that part was included in the movie to quickly establish the fact that Richard was a very shady character (i.e. any "good" cop wouldn't have been involved in that sort of illegal beat-down).
I don't think that the guy who was getting beat had any bearing on the rest of the plot, it was just an inclusion to show that brutal aspect of Richard's character.
