First Aid Care For Dogs With Insect Bites

Biting is an inherent behavior of dog! Even though dogs are considered as man's best friends, people can't help but be intimidated by the fact that the jaws and the sharp teeth can deliver quite a punch. Even without the threats of rabies, a dog bite can still create serious injuries. Would you believe the fact that an insect which is a hundred times smaller in size than a dog's can cause a dog to go into shock merely by its sting?

Insects are more prolific during the summer months. Puppies are most susceptible to insect bites because their energetic and inquisitive nature makes them follow flying insects around. A dog's body part stung by an wasp or a bee or bitten by a scorpion or a spider will be very painful.

Insect bites would have no effects on some dogs. Apart from the pain on the bitten body part, no other reactions will be shown. Some dogs though would start showing insect bite symptoms about 20 minutes after the bite. The eyes, the lips and the ear flaps would swell if the dog is allergic to insect bites. Other dogs would even show more serious reactions to insect bites. The entire face would swell and the pet can shiver and break out in hives. An allergic reaction that causes the face's swelling to extend to the throat is an extremely dangerous condition as the dog will suffer from breathing difficulties because of blocked airway. A dog can go into shock because of breathing difficulty and abnormal heart rate.

A dog that goes into shock because of an insect bite must be taken to a veterinary facility at once. Other mild and non-life threatening reactions to insect bites can be dealt with at home with some first aid treatments. First aid treatments would be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms of insect bite as long as the pet was not stung in the throat and that airway blockage is not one of the allergic reaction to the insect bite.

If the dog was stung by a bee or a wasp, the stinger can be removed with tweezers and the bite area washed with saline solution. Warm compress or a paste made from water and baking soda applied in the sting area will ease the pain as the toxin is drawn out and the swelling reduced. Dogs are susceptible to allergic reactions thus it is the responsibility of the dog owner to have Benadry or other antihistamines in the first aid kit to be able to administer emergency care to the pet. This medication will alleviate the pet's allergic reaction to insect bites.
