Attending A Comic Book Convention
It is that time of year again, time for the annual comic book convention. In this day and age, some have begun to call it the graphic novels convention. Which ever way it is phrased comic book conventions tend to gather people from all social stratas. The ages also vary, however, an average age of an attendee can be placed at around thirty years of age.
The comics or graphic books come in different types and they are presented at the convention for sale or simply display. The typical comic book, if there is such a thing, is historically considered the super hero comic book. Others are more dark, even mysterious thrillers set to a graphic back drop. Graphic means exactly that a picture and not the adult form of graphics. However, some artists do produce what are considered erotic comics.
The presenters use different means to display their art. Some have photo images copied and enlarged to show the caliber of workmanship. Others might allow low grade editions to be carefully perused. Still some use technology to their benefit and display the books on LED backlight screens which provide for a more enhanced color display.
The convention also brings together an entertainment aspect. For instance, many larger publishers would hire and arrange for a person to dress up as one their major characters. The person would then walk about the floor to engage and garner the attention of the attendees. Obviously, there are many ways to grab people's attention. In general, most of the story lines that sell involve some type of violence and a sexy heroine or woman in distress. This is a bit clich', but true.
One artist, this time around, actually went as far as to put together a band. The band's playlist was composed of the leading character's theme song. The drummer, takamine acoustic guitar player, and singer were all dressed as part of the comic. Dancers were placed on either side of the band to grab the viewer's attention. The cost of putting together such a show can be high, but tolerable if the publisher is able to generate the incremental sales.
Going to the convention is fun and can be inspirational. There are stories of triumph of good over evil. There are other more sinister and diabolical story lines. Some even have a soap opera feel to them. Other are more intense with violence and even nudity. Some of the newer comic genres include more contemporary story lines. For instance, they might refer to a current event or crisis.
The experience is definitely unique and puts on display the talents of some of the newer and up and coming artists. Breaking into the comic book industry is a tough challenge. One not only needs a great story, but an engaging character. Then the story has to be displayed artistically. The competition can be fierce.
